Stay Away, Plague
Today marked the beginning of the long landscaping season for Walter and Spencer. From now until November, they will be working virtually every Saturday taking care of properties at a nearby lake, as well as mowing and caring for the church property also. It is hard to never be able to “play” on the weekends like other families do—but this is also God’s provision for us to meet our obligations, and we are thankful for that. Today was a rough one for Spencer. He was at his friend Phil’s house (a neighbor) for a birthday party last night, and they stayed up very late. I knew by Thursday that Spencer was coming down with a cold, despite his insistence that it was just “congestion.”
By the time I sent Jasper over to fetch him for work this morning, Spencer was ready to admit that he was actually sick. He went to work anyway—after all, Walter always works regardless of how sick he is, unless he literally cannot stand up! Normally they are home by mid-afternoon, but not today.
Meanwhile, I pruned all my roses (two months late) and then got Jasper to fertilize them because by then my back was done with bending over. I paid bills and went over our very tight budget yet again. I did some housework. I made gluten-free cookies. I watched one of my creative non-fiction DVD lessons. I finished knitting a dish cloth.
When Walter and Spencer weren’t back by 7:00, we had supper and were just finishing when they finally arrived. They had had a lot of extra work to do and hadn’t even made it to the church to mow because it got dark. Spencer was in a bad way. He tried to eat supper but couldn’t keep it down. We’re not sure if he has a stomach bug or if it’s a combination of lack of sleep, a severe cold, over-exertion, and dehydration. At any rate he collapsed in bed and won’t be going to church tomorrow! Lucy is also not feeling well, but she hung in there for long enough to wash the supper dishes. Tomorrow could be interesting.
Quote of the Day:
Jasper, in response to Mercy’s accusation that he considers watching Lego videos to be the “pinnacle of existence”: “The pinnacle of existence is family.”
